AI IS CHANGING EVERYTHING, BUT CAN WE TRUST IT ?

Artificial intelligence is transforming how people work, communicate and access information, while raising important questions about trust, accuracy, privacy and responsible use.




The truth is, AI is already here. 


It’s writing your emails. It’s recommending what to watch next. It’s helping doctors read scans. It’s even answering customer messages on WhatsApp. 


Artificial intelligence went from something we saw in movies to something we use before 9am every day. 


And as it gets smarter, faster, and more useful, one big question keeps coming up: how do we make sure it doesn’t get out of hand?


Because yes, AI is exciting. But it’s also complicated. And if we don’t handle it well, the same tool that helps us could also hurt us.


THE AI BOOM IS REAL AND IT’S EVERYWHERE


Five years ago, AI sounded like science. Today it sounds like Tuesday.


Open your phone. That keyboard that finishes your sentences? AI. 

That app that removes background from your photos? AI. 

That chatbot that helped you track a package? AI.


Companies are using it to do things they couldn’t do before. Banks use AI to spot fraud in seconds. Hospitals use it to detect cancer earlier. Schools use it to help students learn at their own pace. Content creators use it to brainstorm ideas, write scripts, and edit videos.


For businesses, AI means doing more with less. Automating boring tasks. Analyzing huge amounts of data in minutes. Giving customers faster support without hiring 100 more people.


A lot of CEOs now say the same thing: “If we don’t use AI, we’ll be left behind.”


That’s why there’s a global race to build better AI. Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, Meta, and even startups in Lagos and Nairobi are all in the game.


But here’s the catch. The faster we build, the more risks we create.


WHEN SPEED OUTPACES SAFETY


Think about it like cars. 


When cars were first invented, nobody was talking about seatbelts, traffic lights, or driver’s licenses. People were just excited to move faster. 


Then accidents happened. Then rules came.


AI feels like that moment right now.

We’re building incredibly powerful systems and putting them in everyone’s hands, but we’re still figuring out the safety rules.


Some of the risks are obvious. 


AI can be used to create fake videos and fake voices. Scammers can use it to impersonate your CEO and ask for money. Hackers can use it to write malware in seconds.


Other risks are quieter. 


What if an AI system makes a wrong decision about a loan application? What if it’s biased because of the data it was trained on? What if companies collect too much personal data to “train” their AI and we don’t even know?


These are not far-future problems. They’re happening now.


That’s why people in tech, government, and cybersecurity are all asking the same thing: how do we slow down just enough to build this responsibly?


CYBERSECURITY IS NOW AN AI PROBLEM TOO


The internet already had enough problems. Hackers, phishing, data leaks, ransomware.


Now add AI to the mix.


On the bad side, criminals are using AI to attack faster. They can scan millions of websites for weaknesses. They can create phishing emails that sound exactly like your boss. They can automate scams at a scale we’ve never seen.


On the good side, defenders are using AI too.


Modern security tools now use AI to watch networks 24/7. They look for weird patterns. If someone logs into your account from Lagos and London 10 minutes apart, AI flags it. If a company’s server starts behaving strangely, AI alerts the team before damage is done.


It’s basically an AI vs AI war.


Companies like Digital Encode in Nigeria are even building AI platforms specifically to test company systems for weaknesses before hackers find them. The idea is simple: fight fire with fire.


But this creates a new problem. To protect us with AI, companies need access to a lot of data. And that brings us to privacy.


PRIVACY, DATA, AND THE TRUST PROBLEM


AI is hungry. It needs data to learn.


The more data it gets, the smarter it becomes. 


But where is that data coming from? Your chats? Your photos? Your browsing history? Your medical records?


Most people just click “I agree” without reading. And companies are collecting more than ever to train their models.


That’s making a lot of people nervous. And rightfully so.


If a hospital uses AI to help diagnose patients, that’s great. But who owns that patient data? What if it leaks? What if it’s used for something else later?


In Europe they have GDPR. In Nigeria we have NDPR. But laws are always playing catch-up to technology.


For AI to work long term, people need to trust it. And trust comes from transparency. 


Companies need to explain: what data are you collecting, why, and what are you doing with it. No hiding behind 50-page terms and conditions.


INNOVATION VS RESPONSIBILITY


Every tech company wants to be first. First to launch the smartest AI. First to get millions of users. First to make money.


But being first shouldn’t mean being reckless.


Experts keep saying the same thing: test before you release. Be clear about what the AI can and cannot do. Have humans in the loop for important decisions. 


The goal isn’t to stop progress. The goal is to make sure progress doesn’t blow up in our faces.


Think of it like building a bridge. You don’t open it to traffic the day you finish welding. You test it. You put weight on it. You make sure it won’t collapse.


AI needs the same approach.


Some companies are already doing this. They have “red teams” whose job is to try and break their own AI before the public gets it. They publish safety reports. They let outside researchers test their systems.


It’s not perfect, but it’s a start.


WHAT AI COULD LOOK LIKE IN 5 YEARS


If we get this right, AI could make life a lot easier.


Imagine going to the hospital and AI helps the doctor spot a problem in your scan that a human might miss. 

Imagine students getting a personal AI tutor that adapts to how they learn. 

Imagine small businesses using AI to handle customer service, accounting, and marketing without hiring a huge team.


AI will probably be built into everything. Your phone, your laptop, your car, your workplace software. It won’t feel like “AI” anymore. It will just feel normal.


But that future only happens if people trust it.


And trust comes from 3 things: security, fairness, and control.


Security: My data is safe.  

Fairness: The AI isn’t biased against me.  

Control: I can turn it off or understand why it made a decision.


If we miss any of those, people will reject AI. Just like people rejected early self-driving cars after one bad accident.


WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU AND ME


You don’t need to be a programmer to be affected by AI. It’s already in your life.


So what should you do?


1. STAY AWARE  

Know that the content you see online might be AI-generated. That video of a celebrity saying something crazy? Could be fake. That email from “your bank”? Could be AI-written. Double check.


2. PROTECT YOUR DATA  

Don’t overshare. Use strong passwords. Turn on 2FA. Be careful what you upload. If a free AI tool asks for too much access, ask why.


3. LEARN TO USE IT  

AI isn’t going away. The people who learn to use it will have an advantage. Use it to write better, work faster, and solve problems. But don’t blindly trust it. Always fact-check.


4. ASK QUESTIONS  

If a company uses AI to make decisions about you, you have a right to ask how. Banks, schools, employers. Don’t be afraid to ask.


THE BIGGER PICTURE FOR NIGERIA AND AFRICA


This isn’t just a US or China conversation. Africa has a role to play too.


We have our own problems to solve with AI. Agriculture, healthcare, education, fraud detection. 


Nigerian companies are already building AI for fintech. Kenyan startups are using AI for farming. South African researchers are working on AI for healthcare.


But we also need our own rules, our own data, and our own safety standards. We can’t just copy what Europe or America does.


Because our context is different. Our fraud patterns are different. Our languages are different. Our infrastructure is different.


If we get this right, Africa could leapfrog. Just like we did with mobile money.


THE DANGER OF MOVING TOO FAST


Here’s what keeps experts up at night.


What if a company releases an AI that’s too powerful and no one understands how it works?  

What if it’s used to spread misinformation during an election?  

What if it’s used to automate cyberattacks at a scale that overwhelms defenders?


These are not sci-fi scenarios. They’re real risks.


That’s why there’s a growing push for “AI governance.” Rules about testing, labeling AI content, and holding companies accountable when things go wrong.


Some people call it regulation. Others call it common sense.


Either way, it’s coming. The only question is whether it comes before or after a major incident.


THE HUMAN ELEMENT WILL NOT DISAPPEAR


Despite all the hype, AI is not going to replace humans anytime soon.


AI is good at patterns. It’s good at speed. It’s good at processing huge amounts of data.


But humans are good at judgment. At empathy. At creativity. At understanding context.


The best future is not “AI replaces people.” The best future is “AI helps people.”


A doctor plus AI is better than a doctor alone.  

A teacher plus AI is better than a teacher alone.  

A business owner plus AI is better than a business owner alone.


That’s the partnership we should be building toward.

It will change how we work, how we learn, how we communicate, and how we solve problems.


But with that power comes responsibility.
