Oracle Cloud has announced that it will host Quantinuum’s new quantum system, Helios, to power hybrid AI workloads.
If you have not heard of Quantinum or Helios before, you are not alone. But this partnership could change how companies use artificial intelligence and quantum computing in the next few years.
Let me break it down in simple terms, and explain why this matters for Nigeria, for Africa, and for businesses around the world.
WHO ARE ORACLE AND QUANTINUM?
Oracle
Most people know Oracle as the company behind databases and enterprise software. But Oracle has been investing heavily in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, or OCI, to compete with Amazon AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure.
In the last two years, Oracle has positioned itself as the cloud for serious business. Banks, governments, telecoms, and oil companies already trust Oracle with their most sensitive data. Now Oracle wants to add quantum computing to that mix.
Quantinum
Quantinum is one of the world’s leading computing companies. It was formed from the merger of Honeywell Quantum and Cambridge Quantum. It operates out of the US and UK.
Quantum computers are different from the laptops and servers we use every day. Instead of using "bits" that are either 0 or 1, quantum computers use "qubits" that can be 0, 1, or both at the same time. That gives them the potential to solve certain problems much faster than traditional computers.
Quantinum’s machines are known for having low error rates. That matters because one of the biggest problems in quantum computing is keeping the calculations accurate.
Their new system is called Helios.
MEET HELIOS: QUANTINUUM’S NEW QUANTUM SYSTEM
Helios is Quantinuum’s most advanced quantum computer to date.
While the company has not released every technical detail, here is what we know so far:
1. More Qubits: Helios has more qubits than Quantinuum’s previous systems. More qubits generally means more computing power.
2. Better Stability: Quantum computers are fragile. Helios has improved error correction, which means it can run longer and more complex calculations.
3. Built for Hybrid Use: This is the most important part. Helios was not designed to replace traditional computers. It was designed to work alongside them.

WHAT IS HYBRID AI?
You have probably used AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude. Those tools run on traditional computers using powerful GPUs from companies like Nvidia.
They are very good at language, images, and pattern recognition. But they struggle with certain types of problems.

Quantum computers are potentially very good at these kinds of problems. But they are not good at everything. They are expensive, they require special conditions, and you cannot run a chatbot on a quantum computer alone.
That is where hybrid AI comes in.
Hybrid AI means using a traditional computer and a quantum computer together.
The traditional computer handles the everyday tasks: processing data, running the user interface, managing the application. When it encounters a very complex problem, it sends that specific part to the quantum computer. The quantum computer solves it and sends the answer back.
Oracle and Quantinum want to make that process seamless inside Oracle Cloud.
WHY ORACLE CLOUD?
You might ask, why Oracle and not AWS or Google?
There are three main reasons:
1. Enterprise Trust
Oracle has worked with large enterprises for over 40 years. Banks, insurance companies, and government agencies already run critical systems on Oracle. Those are the same organizations that will be first to experiment with hybrid AI.

Many companies do not want to put all their data in the public cloud. Oracle is strong in "hybrid cloud" setups where some data stays on-premises and some goes to the cloud. That approach fits well with quantum, which will also be used selectively.

Instead of Quantinum building new data centers from scratch, they can plug Helios directly into Oracle’s existing cloud infrastructure. That means customers could start experimenting within months instead of years.
Oracle will provide the servers, networking, security, and software tools. Quantinum will provide the quantum hardware and the software to program it.
WHAT THIS DEAL ACTUALLY MEANS
This is bigger than just one company hosting another company’s hardware.
This is a sign that quantum computing is moving out of the research lab and into the real world.
For years, quantum computers were only available to universities and government labs. Now we are entering the "quantum-as-a-service" era.
In practice, that means any company with an Oracle Cloud account could eventually log in, select "Run on Helios," and use quantum computing without buying their own machine.
It is similar to how cloud storage made it possible for small businesses to access data centers without building their own.
Experts call this "democratizing quantum." Until now, only Google, IBM, and Microsoft offered quantum computers on the cloud. Oracle and Quantinum are now joining that group with a different approach.
HOW COMPANIES COULD USE IT
Let me give you a few concrete examples so this does not sound like science fiction.
Example 1: Banking
A bank wants to approve loans for one million customers. Traditional AI can look at credit scores and income. A hybrid AI system could also run thousands of economic scenarios at once using quantum computing. It could tell the bank: "If inflation rises by 2%, here is how your loan portfolio will be affected."
Example 2: Energy
An oil and gas company wants to decide where to drill. Quantum simulations can model underground geology more accurately than classical computers, potentially saving millions in exploration costs.
Example 3: Pharmaceuticals
A pharmaceutical company is searching for a new drug. Quantum computers can simulate how millions of different molecules might interact with a disease. That could cut years off the research process.
Example 4: Supply Chain
A logistics company with thousands of vehicles needs to optimize routes, fuel stops, and delivery times while accounting for traffic, weather, and regulations. Quantum optimization could find better solutions than current AI.
These are the kinds of problems where hybrid AI could deliver real value.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR NIGERIA AND AFRICA
You might be wondering, how does this affect us here?
1. Jobs and Skills
Oracle already has operations in Lagos. As they roll out quantum services, they will need Nigerian engineers, cloud architects, and data scientists. Expect training programs, certifications, and partnerships with universities.
If you work in tech, learning about quantum and hybrid AI now could give you an advantage in two to three years.
2. Research
Nigerian universities like UNILAG, FUTA, and Covenant University could get access to Helios through Oracle Cloud for research. Imagine a Nigerian researcher using quantum computing to model climate patterns in the Sahel, or to optimize agriculture.
3. Startups
Fintech, health tech, and Agri tech startups will not need to buy a quantum computer. They can simply pay Oracle for access when they need it. That lowers the barrier to entry significantly.
4. Government Use
Government agencies could use hybrid AI for things like election data security, disease outbreak modeling, and infrastructure planning.
The point is, we do not have to wait 10 years. Because this is on the cloud, access can happen much faster.
THE CHALLENGES
This is not all smooth sailing. There are real challenges.
Cost
Quantum computing is still expensive. Even on the cloud, running Helios will not be cheap. At first, only large corporations will be able to afford it regularly.
Talent Gap
How many people in Nigeria know how to program a quantum computer? Very few. We need training programs and university courses urgently if we do not want to be left behind.
Hype vs Reality
Quantum will not replace ChatGPT next year. It will only help with specific types of problems. Companies need to be realistic about what it can and cannot do.
Security
Quantum computers could eventually break current encryption methods. Oracle will need to build strong security measures from the start.
WHAT ORACLE AND QUANTINUM ARE SAYING
Oracle said: "This partnership will accelerate enterprise adoption of hybrid quantum-classical computing. Our goal is to let every Fortune 500 company experiment with quantum without building their own lab."
Quantinum’s CEO said: "Helios represents a major step forward. By running on Oracle Cloud, we bring quantum power to where the data already lives."
In other words, they want to make it as easy as possible.
THE COMPETITION IS HEATING UP
This deal puts pressure on other cloud providers.
Amazon has AWS Bracket. Google has its own quantum team. Microsoft has Azure Quantum.
Now Oracle has an exclusive partnership with Quantinum and the Helios system. That is a strong differentiator.
Expect more partnerships, price competition, and faster innovation in the next 12 months. For customers, that is good news.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Here is what we can expect:
Next 3-6 months: Oracle will integrate Helios into OCI. A private beta will likely open for selected enterprise customers.
Next 12 months: Public access will probably launch. Developers will get APIs to start building hybrid AI applications.
Next 2 years: We should see the first real-world use cases, likely in finance, pharmaceuticals, and logistics.
Next 5 years: Hybrid AI could become as normal as cloud storage. Most users will not even think about whether quantum was involved.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I am optimistic, but also realistic.
The opportunity here is huge. Nigeria does not need to build its own quantum lab to benefit. We can access this technology through the cloud.
But the risk is that we miss the moment. Countries like India, Kenya, and South Africa are already training quantum engineers and running research programs. Nigeria needs to do the same.
The Oracle and Quantinuum partnership shows that the future of AI is not just bigger GPUs. It is a combination of classical and quantum computing.
The companies and countries that understand that early will have an advantage.
Oracle is hosting Helios. The cloud is open.
The question now is: who will build with it first?
